Shopify discount app pricing: per-order fees vs flat plans

Dated comparison of Shopify discount app pricing: flat monthly plans vs per-order fees, what uninstalling does to app charges, and SafeSale’s two plans.

Searching “shopify discount app pricing” gets you a dozen listings, each with a plan table that hides the number you actually need: what a sale app will cost you in the month you use it most. This bulk discount app cost comparison looks at the three pricing models on the market (flat monthly plans, tiered plans that gate features, and plans with a discount app per-order fee), explains how Shopify’s app billing works when you uninstall, and puts the public prices of three named apps and SafeSale in one dated table.

The problem: the bill was not the number on the listing

Pricing surprises are a steady theme in low-star reviews. On Bold Discounts’ review page an October 18, 2023 review says “they charged me $99” within two days of installing and that the developer was “REFUSING to refund me”; an August 28, 2026 review, in Spanish, says the merchant uninstalled the app and is still being charged. On Amai Bulk Discount’s review page a January 26, 2023 review describes paying for an annual plan and then being asked for “an additional $18.95/mo to upgrade to use the basic features”. On Discount Ninja’s review page the pricing model itself is the point of contention, since its plans add a fee per influenced order beyond an included allowance. We link the pages rather than characterise them; the developers’ replies are there too.

Why it happens: three pricing models and one billing system

Every app in the Shopify App Store has to bill through Shopify; the App Store requirements state that apps “must use Shopify App Pricing or the Shopify Billing API for any app charges” and must let merchants change plan without contacting support or reinstalling. So the mechanics are the same for every app; what differs is the shape of the plan.

  • Flat monthly. One recurring charge, generated by Shopify at the start of each 30-day cycle (see app charges). Predictable; the risk is a tier that does not include the feature you assumed was standard.
  • Tiered by capacity or features. Several flat prices with limits (products, variants, sales) or gated features (overrides, exports, badges). The surprise here is usually discovering the gate after the sale is built.
  • Per-order usage fees. A base plan that includes a number of orders, then a usage charge per additional order the app decides it influenced. App listings that use this model carry the footer “Recurring and usage-based charges are billed every 30 days.” The cost tracks your best month, and the definition of “influenced” is the vendor’s.

The “still charged after uninstalling” complaint is mostly a billing mechanic, not a scam. Shopify’s Help Center on uninstalling apps explains that uninstalling a paid app cancels future recurring charges but that you may still be billed for the current cycle, and the app-charges page adds that a charge already generated for the cycle is not removed. If an app charged you for a 30-day cycle yesterday and you uninstall today, that charge stands; the refund conversation is with the developer.

The dated table

All competitor figures below were read from the apps’ public Shopify App Store listings on 2026-09-28 and will change; check the listing before deciding. SafeSale’s row is the plan configuration built into the app; SafeSale is not yet publicly listed, so it has no App Store pricing page to link. All prices are in USD as shown on the listings.

Star ratings are not a pricing signal, but they tell you how many merchants have weighed in.

The manual fix: how to read a plan table before installing

  1. Read the footer. “Recurring and usage-based charges are billed every 30 days” means there is a usage component somewhere; find it.
  2. Find the limit that applies to you. Variants per sale, concurrent sales, products, orders. Count your catalog in variants, not products; a 200-product store with sizes and colours is often 2,000 variants.
  3. Model your peak month, not your average. For a per-order plan, multiply your expected Black Friday orders by the per-order rate and add it to the base price.
  4. Check what the trial covers and when the first charge is generated. Shopify shows app charges under Settings → Billing, so you can see the cycle date.
  5. Uninstall before the cycle renews if you are leaving, and understand that the current cycle is already billed.
  6. Ask what is gated. If restoring your original prices requires a paid tier, that is the most expensive gate in the table, and it is rarely written down.

Our bulk discount app checklist covers the non-pricing questions to ask alongside these.

How SafeSale is priced

SafeSale’s pricing is two flat plans with no usage component, billed through Shopify, each with a 14-day free trial:

  • Starter, $9.99/month: up to 3 concurrent sales and up to 2,000 variants per sale. Per-variant overrides and snapshot CSV export are not included.
  • Pro, $19.99/month: unlimited concurrent sales, up to 20,000 variants per sale, per-variant price overrides in the preview, and snapshot CSV export.

Two things about the gates. First, the variant limit is per sale and enforced before the sale starts, in the preview, so you find out before anything is written. Second, restoring original prices is never behind a plan: the restore button on a sale, the store-wide Restore all original prices action and the reinstall-and-restore path described in the emergency restore guide all work without an active subscription. A pricing model should never be the reason a store is stuck at sale prices.

Frequently asked questions

Why was I still charged after uninstalling a Shopify discount app?

Shopify generates an app's recurring charge at the start of each 30-day billing cycle. Uninstalling cancels future cycles, but a charge that has already been generated for the current cycle still appears on your bill. Shopify's Help Center documents this on its uninstalling-apps and app-charges pages; contact the developer about that final charge.

What is a per-order fee in a discount app?

A usage charge added on top of the monthly plan for each order the app counts as influenced by one of its promotions, beyond the number included in the plan. Discount Ninja's public listing, for example, includes a set number of discounted orders per tier and then bills a per-order amount. Usage charges are billed through Shopify alongside the recurring charge.

Is a cheap flat plan always the better deal?

Not automatically. A flat plan is predictable and does not rise with a good Black Friday, but it can gate features by tier or cap variants per sale. Compare the tier you would actually need, including limits such as variants per sale or concurrent sales, against the orders you expect a per-order plan to bill.

How is SafeSale priced?

Two flat plans billed through Shopify: Starter at $9.99 per month with up to 3 concurrent sales and 2,000 variants per sale, and Pro at $19.99 per month with unlimited sales, up to 20,000 variants per sale, per-variant overrides and CSV export. Both have a 14-day free trial and no per-order fees. Restoring original prices is never gated by plan.
