8 questions to ask before installing a Shopify bulk discount or flash sale app

A buyer's checklist for Shopify sale apps drawn from the failure modes merchants report most: previews, price snapshots, compounding, variant handling, what happens at the end, uninstall, billing and ads.

Read the one-star reviews of any bulk-discount app and the same handful of failures come up again and again: discounts that kept increasing, tiered rules that flattened every variant to one percentage, prices that stayed discounted after the sale or after uninstalling, jobs that took a day to apply, and banners nobody asked for. These eight questions are the ones that would have caught each of them. Ask them in a support chat before you install; how quickly and how specifically the developer answers tells you a lot on its own.

1. Can I see every variant's before and after price before anything changes?

A sale app writes to hundreds or thousands of variants at once. If the first time you see the result is on your storefront, you are testing in production. Look for a preview table with one row per variant, the current price, the new price and the effective percentage, and a warning column. Bonus points if it refuses to start when a discount is above a threshold you set.

2. Does it save the original prices before it writes anything?

Ask where the originals are stored, whether that record can change while the sale runs, and whether you can download it. The answer you want is an immutable snapshot per variant, including empty compare-at values, exportable as a CSV in Shopify's product import format. If the app cannot answer this, it cannot promise a restore.

3. What price does it discount from?

This is the compounding question. If the app computes 20% off the current price and the current price is already a sale price, you get 36%, then 49%, then 59%. Prices should be computed from the saved original, never from what happens to be in the price field right now. Related: if a variant already has a compare-at price when the sale starts, what does the app do with it?

4. Are rules applied per variant?

Tiered sales are per variant by nature: some sizes at 20%, some at 25%, one at a fixed price. Apps that treat the product as a unit apply the first or last rule to everything. Check that the preview is per variant, that you can override a single variant, and that a variant covered by two sales is flagged rather than discounted twice.

5. What exactly happens when the sale ends?

For automatic discounts, Shopify ends them itself. For price rewrites, the app has to run a job that writes every original back. Ask how that job handles API rate limits, what it does when a write fails, whether it retries, and how it tells you. A sale that reads 'ended' while half the prices are still discounted is the single most damaging bug in this category.

6. What happens if I uninstall it?

Shopify revokes an app's access as soon as it is uninstalled, so no app can fix your prices after that point. A good app makes that clear, gives you an 'end everything and restore' button to press first, keeps your snapshots for a while so a reinstall can still restore them without buying a plan, and gives you a CSV you can import yourself. Shopify's own uninstall guide is at help.shopify.com/en/manual/apps/uninstalling-apps.

7. How is it billed, and is anything hidden behind the plan?

Prefer apps billed through Shopify's own billing, so the charge appears on your Shopify bill and stops with the uninstall. Read the plan limits carefully: caps on variants or sales are fine if disclosed up front, not if you discover them mid-sale. And safety features (preview, snapshots, restore) should work on every plan, including a lapsed one.

8. Does it put anything on my storefront that I did not enable?

Some free tiers pay for themselves by injecting banners into your store or thank-you page. Shopify's App Store requirements set rules on what apps may add to a storefront; whatever the rules, you should know exactly which blocks an app adds and be able to turn each off in the theme editor. Theme app extensions are the mechanism to look for: nothing is edited in your theme code and everything is removed on uninstall.

How SafeSale answers

We built SafeSale to pass this checklist rather than to add features around it. Every sale is previewed per variant with warnings and a typed confirmation above your threshold. Sales run as automatic discounts by default, so stored prices are never touched. Opt-in price-rewrite sales snapshot every original first, compute from the snapshot, restore the exact snapshot with a retrying job, log every write, and keep snapshots for 90 days after uninstall. Two flat plans are billed through Shopify, restore is never gated by billing, and the only storefront elements are a sale badge and countdown you enable yourself in the theme editor. If you want to see it rather than read about it, the five-minute walkthrough on our home page runs a real sale on a development store from preview to restore.
