Bold Discounts or Amai alternative: how to switch sale apps

What to check before replacing Bold Discounts or Amai Bulk Discount, how to restore original prices before migrating, and a dated comparison with SafeSale.

If you are looking for a Bold Discounts alternative or an Amai Bulk Discount alternative, you probably have a specific reason: a sale that ended with the wrong prices, a discount that applied twice, code left in your theme, or a bill you did not expect. This guide is not a ranking. It lists what to check in any replacement, gives a migration sequence that will not leave your catalog half-restored mid-season, and ends with a dated, factual comparison that includes SafeSale, which is not yet publicly listed.

The problem: why merchants go looking

Both apps have been on the App Store for a decade and have large, mostly positive review counts, which is exactly why their one- and two-star reviews are informative: they come from long-time users describing specific failures. As of 2026-09-28, Bold Discounts’ low-star reviews include a December 6, 2025 report of sales “STUCK ON MY PRODUCTS” after uninstalling, a June 13, 2024 report of a discount applied “sitewide TWICE”, and an August 28, 2026 report (in Spanish) of charges continuing after uninstall. Amai Bulk Discount’s low-star reviews include a November 28, 2024 report of products going to “.95 cents” with prices “still ACTIVE” after the sale was turned off, and a November 9, 2024 report (in Spanish) of discounts reaching some variants but not others. We link the review pages so you can read each one in full alongside the developers’ replies; we do not claim these experiences are typical, only that they are the ones that send merchants searching for alternatives.

Each of those failures maps to a design question you can ask any replacement before installing it.

What to check before switching

  1. Which mechanism runs the sale? A Shopify automatic discount is applied by Shopify in the cart and checkout and leaves stored prices alone; a price rewrite edits every variant’s price and compare-at, as described in Shopify’s sale pricing guide, and must be undone later. Our comparison of the two explains when each is right. If the app only rewrites, everything below matters more.
  2. Where does the original price live? Ask for the exact answer: a per-variant record of price and compare-at taken before the first write, never overwritten, and used for the restore. Ask what happens to a variant that had no compare-at. See what a price snapshot actually is.
  3. Can you see every variant before publishing? A per-variant preview of current price, sale price and compare-at, with conflicts flagged, is the difference between catching a double discount and reading about it in your orders. See why bulk-discount apps double-discount.
  4. What does it put in your theme? Theme app extension blocks you enable in the editor, or code written into your theme files. Shopify’s theme app extension migration guide describes why the second approach leaves “ghost code” behind. See sale badges without touching theme code.
  5. What happens on uninstall, and what does it cost to leave? Shopify revokes an app’s access when it is uninstalled (access tokens), so any restore must happen before. And per Shopify’s uninstalling apps page, the current billing cycle may still be charged. Our pricing models comparison goes through the plan shapes.

How to migrate mid-season without breaking prices

The order below assumes you are leaving a price-rewriting app while sales are live or recently ended. If you only ever used automatic discounts, skip to step 5.

  1. Export your products now. Products → Export, all products, CSV. This captures the current (possibly discounted) state and is your reference for the diff in step 3. If you have an export from before the first sale, keep that beside it; it is your source of truth for originals.
  2. End every sale in the old app and let it finish. Do not uninstall, disable rules or edit prices while its restore is running. If the app shows progress, wait for it to complete.
  3. Verify the restore with a second export. Compare price and compare-at per variant against your pre-sale originals. Look specifically for variants still carrying a compare-at, prices ending in .95 or .99 that should not, and variants the restore never reached.
  4. Fix stragglers by CSV or bulk editor following Shopify’s product CSV documentation; clear compare-at cells rather than setting them to zero. The stuck prices guide has the detailed procedure.
  5. Remove the old app’s storefront pieces. Turn off its app embeds in Theme settings and, if it wrote code into your theme, clean it out on a duplicate theme before publishing.
  6. Check the billing date, then uninstall. Settings → Billing shows when the app’s cycle renews; uninstalling cancels future cycles but not one already generated.
  7. Set up the new app with a small test sale first. One collection, a short window, on a quiet day; include the end and the restore in the test. Then build the real sale, scheduled to start with a buffer before your campaign goes out.
  8. Keep the exports. Whatever the new app promises, a pre-sale CSV export is the one restore path that depends on no vendor.

Figures for Bold and Amai were read from their public Shopify App Store listings on 2026-09-28; the SafeSale row reflects the app as built and its plan configuration. Both competitors are listed and installable on that date. Ratings and prices change; check the listings before deciding.

We do not tabulate the competitors’ mechanisms or restore behaviour, because we can only verify those for our own app. Here is what SafeSale does, as built, against the five checks above:

  • Mechanism: Shopify automatic discount by default, with a required end date; price rewrite as an opt-in mode for the crossed-out price.
  • Originals: in rewrite mode, one insert-only snapshot row per sale and variant holding price and compare-at (including “none”), written before the first price change and used verbatim for the restore. Snapshots are kept for 90 days after uninstall and a reinstall offers Restore all original prices without a paid plan.
  • Preview: a per-variant table with current price, sale price, compare-at, percentage off, notes and rule; conflicts with other sales listed; the confirmed plan is fingerprinted so what you approved is what is written.
  • Theme: a theme app extension (badge embed and countdown block) driven by app-owned metafields; the app holds only the write_products and write_discounts scopes and cannot touch theme files.
  • Uninstall and cost: two flat plans, no usage fees, 14-day trial; the uninstall webhook attempts a restore, but because Shopify revokes access on uninstall the reliable path is to end sales first, which the app tells you.

Frequently asked questions

Should I uninstall Bold Discounts or Amai before installing a new sale app?

Not first. End every active sale in the old app, confirm with a product export that prices and compare-at values are back to their originals, fix any stragglers, and only then uninstall. Once an app is uninstalled Shopify revokes its access, so it can no longer restore anything for you.

Can I switch sale apps in the middle of a Black Friday sale?

You can, but sequence it: restore the old app's sale to original prices, verify, then start the new sale. Running both at once on the same variants is how prices get double-discounted. If you cannot afford a gap on the storefront, cover it with a native Shopify automatic discount for the hour it takes.

Will SafeSale import my existing sales from another app?

No. SafeSale has no importer for other apps' rules. You recreate each sale by choosing products, collections, tags or vendors and a discount rule, then review the per-variant preview before confirming.

Is SafeSale available on the Shopify App Store today?

Not yet. As of the date of this article it is in submission and not publicly listed. The landing page has a recorded demo of the full flow; the comparison table above states this so you can weigh a shipped app against one still in review.
