Will your Shopify sale show up at the till? Automatic discounts vs price rewrites in POS

Online says 20% off, the register says full price. Why an automatic discount may not reach Shopify POS, when a price rewrite does, and how to run one sale across both.

A shop with one store and a website runs 20% off outerwear for the weekend. The site is right by Friday night. Saturday morning a customer walks in holding her phone, the screen showing the jacket at $96, and the register rings up $120. The staff member can see the sale on the website too. What she cannot see is why her till has not heard about it, and the queue behind the customer is not interested in the explanation.

The explanation is that a Shopify sale is one of two very different objects, and Shopify POS treats them differently. One of them reaches the register automatically and the other reaches it only if you ask, and only on some plans. This post is about that gap: what each kind of sale does at the point of sale, how to decide between them when you sell in both places, and the bits that still need a human with a label printer.

Two kinds of sale, one more time

We have written about the difference between a Shopify automatic discount and a compare-at price rewrite from the storefront’s point of view. The one-line version: an automatic discount leaves prices alone and takes money off in the cart; a price rewrite changes the variant’s price in Shopify and moves the old one into compare-at so the theme can strike it through. SafeSale can build a sale either way, and the choice you make for the website is also, whether you noticed or not, a choice about the shop floor.

What a price rewrite does in POS

A rewrite is the simplest case because POS is not involved. The variant now costs $96 in Shopify, and POS reads prices from Shopify. The product tile shows $96, the cart line is $96, the receipt says $96. It works on POS Lite and POS Pro alike, because no discount feature is being used. Returns during the sale refund what was paid. Reports show the sale as revenue at $96 with no discount column, which some accountants prefer and some do not.

Two things do not follow the price. The first is anything printed. Shelf-edge labels, swing tags and barcode labels carry the price they had when they came out of the printer, and a rewrite that happens at midnight does not reprint them. If your labels come from an app that reads the Shopify price, run a fresh batch on Saturday morning; if they were done by hand, a red sale sticker is still the industry standard for a reason. The second is the saving itself. Online, the theme shows $120 struck through next to $96. At the till there is no strikethrough and no discount line, so the receipt does not tell the customer they saved $24. If that matters to you, say it on the shelf label.

What an automatic discount does in POS

Here is where the Saturday morning scene comes from. Shopify’s help centre is direct about it: automatic discounts apply on every sales channel you have set up except Point of Sale, unless you activate them for POS, and you can only activate them for locations with a POS Pro subscription. The switch lives in the discount’s Availability section as Apply on POS Pro locations. If the discount’s eligibility is set to Markets instead of All customers, you assign a Retail market and the discount applies at the POS Pro locations in it.

Discounts built with Shopify Functions, which is what SafeSale creates in automatic-discount mode, follow the same channel rules. Shopify’s Discount Function API lists POS as a supported surface, POS has officially supported Function discounts since app version 9.10, and the POS help pages say a Functions app you use online can apply the same discounts in store. Supported means it can work, not that it will by default. If the register is on POS Lite, no automatic discount of any kind will fire there. If it is on POS Pro and nobody ticked the box, the website is on sale and the shop is not.

When it is on, the experience is the mirror image of a rewrite. The tile still shows $120. The discount appears as a line in the cart once the jacket is added, with the sale name next to it, and the receipt shows $120, a $24 discount and $96 paid. Staff see the saving and so does the customer. Shelf labels at $120 are, strictly, still correct.

Choosing for a shop that sells both ways

The decision usually falls out of two questions. Is the register on POS Pro? And should the sale be in store at all?

  1. POS Lite, and the sale should apply in store. Use a price rewrite. It is the only option that reaches a Lite register, and the strikethrough you get online is a bonus. Budget ten minutes on Saturday morning for labels.
  2. POS Pro, sale in store and online. Either works. Pick the automatic discount if you want receipts to show the saving and labels to stay valid, or if the sale will outlive a product launch (new products join a Function sale automatically, as we covered last week). Pick the rewrite if your theme’s native compare-at display matters more than any of that. Whichever you choose, open the discount in Discounts after SafeSale creates it and confirm the POS Pro box is ticked.
  3. Online only, full price in store. Automatic discount, POS left off. A rewrite cannot do this, and a store whose staff are explaining to walk-ins why the website is cheaper is a store with a different problem. Say “online exclusive” in the campaign.
  4. In store only. Shopify does not have a native discount that is POS-only and not online; a staff-applied custom discount or a POS-only discount code gets you there. A rewrite is the wrong tool, because it changes the website too.

The combination trap

One behaviour catches retailers out in the first week. A customer buys the discounted jacket and the staff member, being nice, knocks a further 10% off for a scuffed box. On POS that is a custom discount, and whether it stacks on the automatic one depends on the discount combinations the sale allows. If the sale lets product discounts combine, the 10% comes off $96. If the shop also has a loyalty discount code set to combine, the customer can walk out with three reductions on one coat, none of which anyone decided on.

SafeSale previews the exact per-variant price before a sale goes live and refuses to put the same variant into two of its own active sales, but it cannot see a staff member’s thumb. Decide the combination settings when you create the sale, and tell the floor team in the same message that tells them the sale exists.

Retail locations are markets now

One more detail for multi-store retailers. Shopify Markets can now include retail locations, which means a group of stores can be a market of its own, with its own catalog and prices. An automatic discount whose eligibility is set to Markets can be pointed at that Retail market, which is a cleaner way to run a regional in-store promotion than toggling POS Pro per location. It also means a rewrite made on the default catalog may not be the price your Toronto stores charge if those stores have a catalog of their own; the markets and currencies post goes through how SafeSale handles per-market prices.

Before the weekend

  • Check which POS plan each location is on. The answer decides whether an automatic discount can reach it.
  • If you go with an automatic discount, open it in Discounts the moment it exists and confirm POS Pro availability or the Retail market. Then ring up a sale item on a test register.
  • If you go with a rewrite, schedule label reprints for opening time, and tell staff the receipt will not show a discount line.
  • Set discount combinations deliberately and brief the floor.
  • Whichever mode, let SafeSale schedule the end and the revert, so that on Monday morning the website and the register go back to full price at the same minute.

The customer with the phone was not wrong, and neither was the till. They were reading two different objects. Pick the one that reaches both before the sale starts, and the Saturday queue will be about jackets.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Shopify automatic discount not applying in POS?

Automatic discounts apply to every sales channel except Point of Sale unless you switch them on for POS, and Shopify only allows that for locations on a POS Pro subscription. Open the discount in Discounts, look at the Availability section and tick Apply on POS Pro locations, or assign a Retail market if the discount's eligibility is set to Markets. On POS Lite an automatic discount will not apply at all; a price rewrite will.

Do sale prices set by a price rewrite show in Shopify POS?

Yes, on any POS plan. A rewrite changes the variant's actual price in Shopify, so the POS product tile, the cart and the receipt all show the sale price. There is no discount line, because nothing is being discounted: the price is the price. Printed shelf labels and price tags are the one thing that does not update by itself.

Can I run a sale online only and keep full price in store?

With an automatic discount, yes: leave it unavailable on POS. With a price rewrite, no: the variant price is shared by every channel, so a rewritten price is the in-store price too. If you need different prices online and in store, use an automatic discount for the online part, or give your retail locations their own market with its own catalog.

Can staff still give a manual discount on top of an automatic sale in POS?

They can add a custom discount to the line or the cart, and whether it stacks with the automatic discount depends on the discount combinations you allowed when creating the sale. If your automatic discount allows combining with other product discounts, a staff discount will come off the already reduced price. Turn combinations off on the sale, or brief staff, before the weekend.
