Shopify Canvas and SafeSale: what works today

Shopify Canvas can't add app blocks or embeds yet. What that means for SafeSale: discounts and price rewrites keep working, the badge and countdown need a non-Canvas theme.

Shopify introduced Canvas today: a new way to design a store by describing what you want to Sidekick, which then builds and edits the theme for you. It is in early access for some stores and lives alongside the theme editor you already know; on the Themes page you can start a theme with New, or copy an existing one with Duplicate in Canvas. Shopify's help center has the details. This post covers the one thing that changes for a SafeSale merchant.

App blocks and app embeds are not in Canvas yet

Shopify's requirements page is direct about it: you can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas. Shopify says that support is coming before Canvas becomes the default editor, and that apps won't need changes for it. Until then, a theme that is edited in Canvas has no way to switch on anything an app delivers through a theme app extension.

A few other facts from the same pages matter here. A theme created with New, or copied with Duplicate in Canvas, becomes a Canvas theme and shows a Canvas badge on the Themes page. A badged theme opens only in Canvas: Edit theme no longer takes you to the standard theme editor. Canvas works with Shopify-developed themes such as Dawn and Horizon and with custom themes, not with third-party Theme Store themes, and a theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates.

What this means for SafeSale

The sale itself is unaffected. In Functions mode SafeSale creates a Shopify automatic discount that runs at checkout; in price-rewrite mode it changes the variant prices and compare-at prices from a snapshot. Neither touches the theme or depends on it, so a Canvas theme shows the same strike-through price and the same checkout discount as any other theme.

What Canvas cannot do today is show the two optional storefront extras. The Sale badge is an app embed and the Sale countdown is an app block, so on a Canvas theme the links on SafeSale's Settings page have nothing to add to. If you click Enable in theme editor and nothing appears, the Canvas badge on your live theme is the reason, not a broken install.

How to use the badge and countdown anyway

  1. Open Online Store → Themes and look for the Canvas badge on your live theme.
  2. Work on a theme without the badge: the original theme you started from, or a copy made with Duplicate (not Duplicate in Canvas). Duplicating in Canvas leaves the original editable in the standard theme editor.
  3. Use the links on SafeSale's Settings page, which open the standard theme editor with the block placed, and click Save.

We will remove the note from the app and re-test the links when Shopify ships theme app extension support in Canvas. If you run into anything that does not match what is described here, the support address on the SafeSale site is the fastest way to reach us.

Frequently asked questions

Do SafeSale discounts work on a Shopify Canvas theme?

Yes. In Functions mode the sale is a Shopify automatic discount applied at checkout, and in price-rewrite mode the sale changes the variant prices themselves. Neither depends on the theme, so both work the same on a Canvas theme as on any other.

Why doesn't the sale badge or countdown appear on my Canvas theme?

Shopify's Canvas does not support app blocks or app embeds yet. The badge is an app embed and the countdown is an app block, so a theme with the Canvas badge cannot enable either. Shopify has said support is coming before Canvas becomes the default editor and that apps will not need changes.

How do I use the badge and countdown while Canvas lacks app block support?

Enable them on a theme without the Canvas badge: your original theme, or a copy made with Duplicate (not Duplicate in Canvas) on Online Store > Themes. Then use the links on SafeSale's Settings page, which open that theme in the standard theme editor with the block in place.

How can I tell whether a theme is a Canvas theme?

On Online Store > Themes it carries a Canvas badge. Any theme created with New, or copied with Duplicate in Canvas, is a Canvas theme, and Edit theme opens it in Canvas rather than the standard theme editor.
