Gift cards during a Shopify sale: excluded, still spendable

Why SafeSale never marks down gift card products, what that means for shoppers paying with a gift card, and how to sell a discounted gift card on purpose.

"Gift cards during a sale" means two different things depending on who is asking. A shopper means: can I pay for the discounted jumper with the gift card my aunt sent? A merchant means: I am about to take 25% off the whole store, and there is a product called Gift Card sitting in the catalog. Is that going to be 25% off too?

The second question is the one that costs money if the answer is wrong. This post explains what a gift card product actually is in Shopify, why SafeSale refuses to mark one down no matter how the sale is targeted, how that sits with shoppers who want to spend a card on sale items, and what to do if a discounted gift card is genuinely what you want to sell.

A gift card product is money with a product page

In Shopify, a gift card is a product with a special flag. It has variants like any other product, but each variant is a denomination: the price the buyer pays is also the balance the recipient can spend. Shopify marks these products as gift cards in the admin and in the API, and the admin's product search can filter on it. It sits alongside the other fields on the product details page, which is also how it ends up in collections, tag searches and vendor lists like everything else.

That last part is the trap. A gift card product is very often in your "All products" automatic collection. If it carries the brand name as vendor, a vendor-targeted sale finds it. If someone tagged it "gifts" for a Christmas landing page, a tag-targeted sale finds it. A tool that treats it like a normal product will do exactly what you asked for, which is to sell 100 of your currency for 75.

What 25% off a gift card actually does

Take a store-wide 25% sale that includes a 100.00 gift card. The card now sells for 75.00 and still loads 100.00 onto the recipient's balance. A shopper who notices buys the card, then uses it to buy sale items that are themselves 25% off. The maths on that second step is unkind: 75.00 of real money buys 100.00 of balance, which buys goods with a pre-sale price of 133.33. You have given 44% off and the discount is also now sitting in gift card liabilities that you will honour after the sale ends.

In price-rewrite mode the damage has an extra twist. A rewrite sets a compare-at price so the theme shows "was 100.00, now 75.00", and on a gift card that caption is literally true in the worst way. Shoppers screenshot it. Some stores have found out about the problem from a forum thread rather than from their own reports.

How SafeSale keeps gift cards out

SafeSale excludes gift cards in three independent places, so a bug in one cannot leak a gift card into the sale.

  • The catalog search. When you target collections, tags, vendors, product types or individual products, SafeSale turns that into a Shopify product search. Every query it sends begins with the condition that the product is not a gift card, before any of your criteria are added. A gift card product in a targeted collection is simply not returned.
  • The product loader. Each product that comes back is checked again for the gift card flag and dropped if it is set. This covers the case where a product changes after the search ran.
  • The checkout function. In automatic discount mode the actual discount is applied at checkout by a Shopify Function that reads the sale configuration. The function walks the cart lines and skips any line whose product is a gift card, so even a card that somehow reached the cart with the sale active is charged at full value.

The sale editor states the rule under the targeting fields, "Gift cards are always excluded", and the preview table that shows every variant before you publish never lists one. There is no override to include them, deliberately. Every other exclusion in SafeSale is something you choose per variant; this one is not negotiable because there is no legitimate sale that wants it. The same preview is what protects you from the other "I did not mean that product" cases, covered in what happens to products added during a sale.

Paying with a gift card during the sale

This is the shopper's question, and the answer is a plain yes. A gift card is a form of payment. At checkout, Shopify first works out what the order costs, including any sale price on the product and any automatic discount that applies, and only then asks how the shopper wants to pay. The gift card balance is applied against that total like a card payment. It does not interact with discount combination rules, because it is not a discount.

That holds in both SafeSale modes. In price-rewrite mode the sale price is simply the product price, so there is nothing to interact with at all. In automatic discount mode, the Function reduces the line, Shopify totals the cart, the shopper enters the gift card code and pays any remainder with another method. If your support inbox gets "can I use my gift card on sale items?" during a promotion, the answer does not depend on which mode you picked. The two modes are compared in automatic discount vs compare-at price rewrite.

When you do want to sell a gift card for less

There are real promotions built on gift cards: "buy a 100.00 card for 90.00 in December" is a standard cash-flow move for restaurants and salons, and "spend 150.00, get a 20.00 card" is a common Black Friday hook. Neither should be done by marking the gift card product down, for the reason above: the product price is the balance.

  • Issue the card manually. Shopify lets you create gift cards from the admin with any value and send them to a customer. Sell a normal product called "Holiday gift card, 100.00 value" at 90.00, then issue the 100.00 card to the buyer. The liability is right and the product page says what it means.
  • Bonus card with purchase. Fulfil the order, then issue a card for the bonus amount. This keeps the main order's margin intact and the card is a separate, trackable thing.
  • A code scoped to the gift card product. Whether Shopify's own discounts can be applied to gift card products has changed over the years and differs by discount type. If you want this route, test it on a development store against the current Discounts documentation before you announce it. SafeSale will not help here, and that is intentional.

Before the sale: a two-minute check

  • In the admin's product list, filter for gift card products and note which collections and tags they belong to. Nothing needs to change; you just want to know they are there.
  • Build the sale in SafeSale and open the preview. Search the table for the gift card product. It will not be there, which is the point, but seeing that is faster than reading this post again.
  • If your theme shows a sale badge based on compare-at price, the gift card page will not get one, because its price never changes. If you add sale badges by collection instead, keep the gift card out of the badge collection.
  • Check the gift card product's own page for any "sale" copy left over from a previous promotion. Shoppers do read it.

A store-wide sale is the one time most merchants think about their gift card product at all, usually a day after it went live. SafeSale makes the decision for you, in the query, in the loader and in the checkout function, and tells you in the editor that it has. Spend the two minutes on the checklist above and move on to the sale itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does a store-wide SafeSale sale discount gift card products?

No. Gift card products are left out at three points: the catalog search that builds the target list asks Shopify for non-gift-card products only, every product is checked again when it is loaded, and the checkout discount function skips any cart line that is a gift card. There is no setting to include them, and they never appear in the preview table.

Can a customer pay for sale items with a gift card?

Yes. A gift card is a payment method, not a discount, so it is applied at checkout after the sale price or automatic discount has already been worked out. Nothing in SafeSale touches payment methods, in either mode.

How do I sell a gift card at a discount on Shopify?

Not through a markdown on the gift card product, because the product's price is also the value the recipient receives. The usual routes are to issue the gift card from the admin with a value higher than what was paid, or to offer a bonus card with a qualifying purchase. Check Shopify's current discount documentation before relying on a discount applying to a gift card product.

Why does my gift card product not show in the SafeSale preview when its collection is targeted?

Because gift cards are excluded before the preview is built, even when they sit in a targeted collection, carry a targeted tag or belong to a targeted vendor. The sale editor says so under the targeting fields: gift cards are always excluded.
